The Water Fund in 2024

Throughout 2024, the Cooperation Fund for Water and Sanitation remained focused on advancing the progressive realisation of the human rights to water and sanitation, with a continued emphasis on promoting equitable water management that respects both people and the environment.

During the year, two new programmes were approved for Guatemala, alongside an extension of funding for the ongoing programme in Portoviejo, Ecuador. These approvals represent a total contribution of €5 million. This latest funding brings the cumulative budget of the Cooperation Fund for Water and Sanitation (FCAS, standing for Fondo de Cooperación para Agua y Saneamiento) since its inception to €815 million.

In parallel, implementation began for the operations approved in the previous year, with a focus on enhancing access to water and sanitation services in rural communities across Guatemala, Bolivia, Honduras and Mexico. Delivery continued across all other ongoing programmes, with 17 currently in implementation and a further five under design. Work also progressed in the Fund’s core strategic areas: advancing gender equality and cultural equity, strengthening governance and institutions, and promoting integrated water resource management.
